For stage magician Quinn Bradley, he thought his time in Alissia was over. He'd done his job for the mysterious company CASE Global Enterprises, and now his name is finally on the marquee of one of the biggest Vegas casinos. And yet, for all the accolades, he definitely feels something is missing. He can create the most amazing illusions on Earth, but he's also tasted true power. Real magic.

He misses it.

Luckily--or not--CASE Global is not done with him, and they want him to go back. The first time, he was tasked with finding a missing researcher. Now, though, he has another task:
Help take Richard Holt down.

It's impossible to be in Vegas and not be a gambler. And while Quinn might not like his odds--a wyvern nearly ate him the last time he was in Alissia--if he plays his cards right, he might be able to aid his friends.

He also might learn how to use real magic himself.

Review: FOREVER INNOCENT by Deanna Roy

FOREVER INNOCENT by Deanna Roy

Category/Genre: New Adult Contemporary

Pub Date: Available now!!
ARC Received from Casey Shay Press in exchange for an honest review.
Dannie says: A gripping read, but I'm still looking for the ending!
"Our baby died on prom night, and nothing was ever the same again."

Corabelle doesn’t feel like any of the other college girls. On what should have been one of the happiest nights of her life, she and her boyfriend Gavin watched a nurse disconnect the ventilator from their seven-day-old baby. During the funeral two days later, Gavin walked out and never returned.

Since then, her life has been a spiral of disasters. The only thing that has helped is her ability to black out whenever the pain gets too hard to bear, a habit that has become an addiction.

When Gavin shows up in her astronomy class four years later, he is hell-bent on getting her back, insisting she forgive him. Corabelle knows she can’t resist the touch that fills the empty ache that has haunted her since he left. But if he learns what she has done, if he follows the trail back through her past, her secrets will destroy their love completely. And once again, she’ll lose the only person who always believed she was innocent.

WHAT I LIKED

The male MC. Though I wasn't crazy about his behavior all the time, I did find him relatable. He was a like not a love, though. I'm still not entirely sure I wanted the book to end the way it did where the romance is concerned. But I will leave it like that because spoilers suck. :)

WHAT I LOVED

The heartbreaking concept. As soon as I read the blurb on NetGalley I had to request it. That said, I didn't anticipate it being as triggering for me as it wasAnd the text rang true to the book blurb. I was hooked throughout. Read it in less than forty-eight hours, despite life and what not that required dealing with.

On a related note--the authenticity. As the mother of a NICU preemie I can personally vouch for the authenticity of those flashback scenes. Unfortunately it seems the author can vouch for her authenticity personally. You should know if you've lost a child or had a baby spend time in an incubator before they were strong enough to go home, that some of these scenes may be difficult to read. But the authenticity is there for sure.

WHAT I WANTED MORE OF

Denouement--I felt like we were a chapter or two short of a full story arc. Some of the major themes were left unfinished or partially finished. I felt, quite strongly, that story ended too soon.

A stronger female MC. There was a lot of rescuing going on, and not just by the male MC. I think in situations where the story opens with a situation that has clearly been traumatizing for the heroine, that aspect of the MC's character arc from hero blown sideways to hero as warrior is exceedingly important. I think more denouement would have offered the opportunity for the author to show more growth in the main character.

Stronger, more intentional character arcs overall. While I found the plot and pace very strong throughout, I didn't see a lot of character growth happening. Not only did some of the couple's glaringly obvious flaws go unaddressed, as people the author didn't show us a heck of a lot of growth from chapter one to the final page. Some of the minor characters vanished altogether without any tying up of their story lines.

Short story long, I was really engaged by this read, so much that I didn't want it to end. At least without us knowing the full story.

TOP TEN CHARACTER NAMES

I'm a sucker for a good character name. I spend entirely too much time deciding what to name people in my own writing. I cheated a little this week and included some characters from movies or television, because at the end of the day that's all writing, too.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

Ebeneezer Scrooge

Gandalf the Grey

Gargamel

Hannibal Lecter

Mayella Ewell

Severus Snape

Tom Marvalo Riddle/I Am Lord Voldemort

I think I'm just obsessed with the names of British characters. Okay, what's on YOUR list that I forgot???

An Interview with SILENT ECHO Author Elisa Freilich

Title: SILENT ECHO by Elisa Freilich

Pub Date: September 10th by Diversion Books

Author's:  GoodReads    Twitter     Website

Haunted by silence, a mute teenage girl is mysteriously given back her voice ... and it is divine.

Rendered mute at birth, Portia Griffin has been silent for 16 years. Music is her constant companion, along with Felix, her deaf best friend who couldn’t care less whether or not she can speak. If only he were as nonchalant about her newfound interest in the musically gifted Max Hunter.

But Portia’s silence is about to be broken with the abrupt discovery of her voice, unparalleled in its purity and the power it affords to control those around her. Able to persuade, seduce and destroy using only her voice, Portia embarks on a search for answers about who she really is, and what she is destined to become.

Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, SILENT ECHO: A Siren's Tale is an epic story filled with fantasy, romance and original music.

About Elisa:

Raised in rural Monsey, New York, Elisa spent her days reading whatever crossed her path and developing a keen appreciation for the ever-present music in her home – from classical to rock.

After her college years at Boston University, Elisa continued her creative pursuits, working as a junior VP of Marketing at a corporate graphic design agency and, later, as an interior decorator. Eventually, Elisa left the workforce to raise her family, in her now hometown of Englewood, NJ.

When Elisa is not writing, her creative outlets still abound. She is fierce with a set of knitting needles, a hot glue gun and any ingredients that can somehow be fashioned into a sinful and highly caloric babka.

Tell us a little about your writer's journey so far?
Elisa: The journey has been a great education in “stick-to-it-ivness”.  SE took me about 2 months to write and then 2 years to get out into the world.  Of course, there were rejections at first, and then once I partnered up with JVNLA, I went through many rounds of editing until finally my story found the perfect home at Diversion Books.  I was like The Little Engine that Could always telling myself, “I think I can, I think I can!” (Ok, maybe that was my husband sometimes encouraging me but still, that was my mantra because I believe so strongly in my story.)

Okay, let's hear your Twitter Pitch! (140 characters or less.)
Elisa: Silent Echo is a Glee meets Greek Mythology thrill ride that will have YA readers everywhere wondering if they too possess untapped powers.
(I left out hashtags here – didn’t want to waste my characters!)

What inspired you to write this book? How is it a book only you could write?
Elisa: I have always been an avid lover of fiction, music and mythology – not the most mainstream high school student, therefore.  So I decided to write a book that would fuse these passions and revolve around a girl who also was not swimming in the main stream of her own high school.

Why is this a book that only I could have written?  Well, when I was little girl, I was in constant awe of my father’s skills as a wordsmith.  Truly, he was the most effective communicator I had ever met – for good or for bad, and though he is no longer with us I often think of his uncanny ability to turn a phrase with great ease or to describe an event so skillfully that all who listened were transported.  There is power in words, in language, in song.  And Silent Echo gave me a chance to focus on that power to an exponential degree.

What's your favorite thing about writing?
Elisa: When I am so in my groove that I literally cannot get the words or thoughts out fast enough.  I used to correct type-o’s as I went along but then one day I decided to liberate myself – get the thoughts down and then go back.  I love looking back at those big chunks of underlined words and knowing that the main dish has been prepared and now it simply needs to be “salted to taste”.  (Sorry – I have a penchant for food related metaphors.)

What's your least favorite thing?
Elisa: The dreaded “block”.  I believe writer’s block is probably worse than having one’s head on the chopping block!  Ok, maybe not quite.  But usually I need to step away for a few days to re-charge and I feel so unsettled during those days – like I’m wasting precious time.  (Although I suspect my kids love those days when Mommy has stashed away her laptop and is theirs entirely!)

Now it's time to brag a little--What do you love most about your book?
Elisa: What I call the “ical” scene (not to be confused with the iCal scene – of which there is one too).  There is a scene where Portia is confronting her demons in the mirror and wages a verbal battle where all the words end with “ical” – ie:
“Of words I am alchemical,
A master alphabetical,
I blend my sounds harmonical,
Until they are volcanical…”
I was so in this scene when I was writing it that I could feel Portia’s mind racing for her next verse, her voice swelling with every phrase.  I love re-reading this scene – I still feel its intensity every time.

What has surprised you most about publishing post-agentEditing.  Just when you think you’ve gotten there, there is always one more tweak to be made.  The fine-tuning is so worth it, but definitely arduous.

Okay, now a little about you. (And yes, I stole these questions from In the Actor's Studio with James Lipton.)

What is your favorite word?
Elisa: Peripatetic

What is your least favorite word?
Elisa: Meconium

What turns you on?
Elisa: Men who have confidence on the dance floor.

What turns you off?
Elisa: Overt male masters of the universe.

What sound or noise do you love?
Elisa: The sound of my husband’s true belly laugh.

What sound or noise do you hate?
Elisa: When Cicadas come out after 17 years of hibernation and call out to one another.

What profession, other than your own, would you most like to attempt?
Elisa: Being a vintner in Napa.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear G-d say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
Elisa: “I’m sorry I didn’t let you know earlier – I realize I could have saved you a boatload in therapy…”

Finally, what's the one question you've always wanted to answer in an interview? (And of course, you have to answer it!)
Elisa: What is your favorite romantic scene in a movie?  Like the one that you watch over and over again on iTunes when nobody is around?

I’d have to go with The Notebook when Ryan Gosling carries Rachel McAdams up the stairs without so much as breaking passionate contact for even a nanosecond.  (Can you tell I’ve seen it like a gazillion times?)

YALLFest 2013: An Interview with Ransom Riggs

I'm honored to participate in the blog tour for this year's YALLfest Authors. For those who don't know what YALLfest is, you can find out more about the awesomeness and the all-star list of authors participating by clicking here. And if you live in the Carolinas or within driving distance of Charleston, SC, mark your calendar for November 9th! I want to hug all of you!!

Today's interview is with Ransom Riggs, whose book cover alone makes me skeerd. It's been on my TBR list for way too long, because I need someone to hold me while I read it. **looks around for volunteers** Here's a little about Ransom and his fabulous book!

About This Author:

Ransom Riggs grew up in Florida, where he spent his formative years making silly movies with his friends in their various backyards, snorkeling, and complaining about the heat. He studied English at Kenyon College and film at the University of Southern California. He lives in Los Angeles. He makes films you can watch on his YouTube page: www.youtube.com/ransriggs. He enjoys traveling to exotic lands and complaining about the heat.

What one thing do you need to have when you write?
Silence. My noise-cancelling headphones have become almost essential.

What is the hardest line to write- the first or the last?
The first. I rewrite and rewrite it a million times. The last comes easy.

Tell us 5 random facts about yourself.
I’m six foot four. I lived on a working farm until I was five. I used to know how to cook Indian food but now I’ve forgotten. I love documentaries. One day I will conquer the moon.

What are you working on now?
A novel for Little, Brown the plot of which is SECRET! (Sort of, for now. But I’m really excited about it.)

What is your favorite genre to write in? To Read?

Oh, definitely YA to write in. I read everything, lots of YA, lots of adult, nonfiction of all sorts. I even read poetry when I’m feeling ambitious. I think it’s crucial to have lots of different influences. If you only read in the genre you write in, your writing will sound like everything else that’s already out there.

About Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children:

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. And a strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience.

As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children who once lived here - one of whom was his own grandfather - were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a desolate island for good reason.

And somehow - impossible though it seems - they may still be alive.

YALLFest Interview: Rainbow Rowell

I'm honored to participate in the blog tour for this year's YALLfest Authors. For those who don't know what YALLfest is, you can find out more about the awesomeness and the all-star list of authors participating by clicking here. And if you live in the Carolinas or within driving distance of Charleston, SC, mark your calendar for November 9th! I want to hug all of you!!

So, unless you're new around here, you may have gotten the inkling that I'm maybe a little obsessed with a little book called ELEANOR AND PARK. One of the authors I'm most hoping to meeting at YALLFest is today's interviewee, Rainbow Rowell. Here's a little about Rainbow and her books.

About This Author:

Rainbow Rowell writes books. Sometimes she writes about adults (Attachments and Landline).
Sometimes she writes about teenagers (Eleanor & Park and Fangirl). But she always writes about people who talk a lot. And people who feel like they’re screwing up. And people who fall in love.
When she’s not writing, Rainbow is reading comic books, planning Disney World trips and arguing about things that don’t really matter in the big scheme of things.
She lives in Nebraska with her husband and two sons.

What one thing do you need to have when you write?
RR: Lip balm.

Describe your book in 5 words.
RR: FANGIRL
       Earnest, snowy, swoony, minty, bookish.

What is the hardest line to write- the first or the last?
RR: THE FIRST! The whole first page is a nightmare. I want people to just skip it. And I always end u rewriting it.

Best writing tip you ever received?
RR: "Just finish your book.”

What one young adult novel do you wish you had when you were a teen? Why?
RR: Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt. I think it would have made me feel less alone.

Where's your favorite place to write?
RR: At coffeeshops. In giant overstuffed chairs.

What are you working on now?
RR: I’m revising my adult novel, Landline, which comes out in spring 2014, and playing with a romantic/political/tragicomic fantasy.

What is your favorite genre to write in? To Read?
RR: I write mostly contemporary. I read mostly fantasy.

At what point in the development of an idea do you know that it will become a full-length novel?

RR: All of my ideas are full-length novels. I have a hard time narrowing my scope.

About FANGIRL:

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing
up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

About ELEANOR AND PARK

Eleanor & Park reminded me not just what it’s like to be young and in love with a girl, but also what it’s like to be young and in love with a book.”—John Green, The New York Times Book Review

Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits—smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love—and just how hard it pulled you under.

Eleanor & Park is the winner of the 2013 Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Best Fiction Book.

Bono met his wife in high school, Park says.
So did Jerry Lee Lewis, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be, she says, we’re 16.
What about Romeo and Juliet?
Shallow, confused, then dead.
I love you, Park says.
Wherefore art thou, Eleanor answers.
I’m not kidding, he says.
You should be.
