Happy Book Birthday to WASTELAND by C. Elizabeth Vescio!

Wasteland by C. Elizabeth Vescio

Happy Release Day to C. Elizabeth Vescio's WASTELAND (Wasted #2.5), a collection of short stories that take place in the world of her Wasted Series! Check out the book and excerpt, and be sure to enter the giveaway in the Rafflecopter below!

Inside the halls of Osiris, the men and women who make the contract killing agency tick polish their weapons and hone their skills. But how did they start working for Nero and Lex in the first place, and when did they find out they were destined to kill people for a living? Before Frankie Fairholm let you into her crazy, dysfunctional world of murder for hire, the lives of these men and women were already in danger. Their training was put to the test alongside their morals. A troubled Catholic school girl with a penchant for murder, a naive con-woman in over her head, a driven socialite with a bad day that keeps getting worse, an assassin second-guessing his sworn oath... being a contract killer doesn’t mean you aren’t human, it just means your humanity is hard to find, and probably a bit tarnished.

Excerpt from WASTELAND

Excerpt from the Accidental Savant

My feet hit the pavement, making the “bomp bomp bomp” of my heels match my pounding heart.

It was the first time I had to run in stilettos. Even better, I was running in a ridiculous pink party dress, which Brian had made me wear.

I always fall for the wrong kind of guy.

This particular bad choice had been taking advantage of my poker skills—making me cheat lonely men out of thousands at the casinos in Vegas. I almost got away with it, until a big Italian guy burst in on a tournament and pointed a gun at my head. Behind him, two more men appeared—not quite as intimidating, but still packing major heat.

Brian took one look at the men and bolted from the room, leaving me and everyone else to lose our shit. I wasn’t the most graceful under pressure.

The big guy seemed like he was after Brian, but he quickly turned his focus on me, which made me panic and bolt. Guns meant business.

So, I found myself running; I started on the top floor of a suite at Caesar’s Palace and somehow managed to find my way to the parking garage. I don’t know how. Everything was a blur, but I didn’t dare stop.

Scary men were after me and, of course, my shitty boyfriend was nowhere to be seen.
The only thing powering me forward was the line of coke I had snorted in the bathroom an hour prior.

It was four in the morning; the garage was empty of people. I made my way to the back entrance, hoping I could escape down Flamingo Road toward the Rio.

I was almost to the exit when the headlights of a black SUV lit me up from behind.

I turned my attention to the screeching brakes to make sure I wasn’t about to get run over. That’s when I was tackled from the side by what felt like a Mack truck.

We both went flying; his hand grabbed onto my frilly pink dress and ripped a portion of the tulle. I rolled out of the way to get a better look at him.

Same guy from upstairs, I realized.

He still had the gun in his hand, but he was a bit out of sorts.

The back door to the SUV opened up and another man emerged. I did a double take—he looked the same as the man in front of me.

Jesus Christ.

I didn’t have time for this.

Fangirl Saturday! A Review of UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED by C. Elizabeth Vescio

Book Name: Uncontrollably Wasted (The Wasted Series, #2) by C. Elizabeth Vescio
Book Genre: New Adult
Pub date: Fall 2013 by Luna Station Press
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.
Dannie Says: I am uncontrollably obsessed with this book!

On Friday, I posted an interview with C. Elizabeth Vescio who is--hands down--my favorite new-to-me author of 2013. You can read the review of her debut in this series, ELEGANTLY WASTED, here. Here's a little about the sequel UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED, available now. Buy links at the bottom of the post!

It's been a year since Francesca Fairholm met the rest of the Osiris team and the company heads, her two half brothers Nero and Lex. As they groom her for leadership, it's all Frankie can do to keep her cynical sarcasm in check as she starts training two new Strikers, avoids the romantic advances of Spark Dawson, and does her best to pry a little family history from her cold, distant Aunt Alexa.

With the pressure of her secret dual life building and her mother acting suspiciously, Frankie's sanity is pushed to the brink when she makes a grisly discovery that shakes the young Striker to her core. Despite her cousins' fear that her panic attacks signal a full mental breakdown, Frankie is positive she's not crazy. Finding clarity in her personal investigation into Osiris's origins, she uncovers more about the company than she would rather know.

As her life starts to unravel, things get deadly and, before she knows it, she's facing down an old target's pissed-off widow, an unstoppable mercenary, and the one thing she's most terrified of admitting to herself.

It's possible the whole situation won't explode in her face. Yeah, like Frankie has that kind of luck.

WHAT I LIKED

Gawd, you guys. Nearly everything. I am such a fangirl of Cara's. And before you go saying we're twitter friends and that I'm biased, we became twitter friends because I got an ARC of one of her books and thought it kicked ass. I really need to skip the "Like" section of this review because I just love this book so hard.

WHAT I LOVED

Vescio's attention to details: from character names to setting details to provocative use of color imagery, this book reads like a movie. I'm not a fan of doing blog posts involving casting actors who would play my characters on TV or IMAX, but I felt myself doing that as I was reading UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED. There is such beautiful imagery, beautifully horrible at times, haunting even, but I loved every bloody moment. (See what I did there?)

The characters--never in my life have I fallen in love with a more genuinely immoral and unsavory group of characters. Now granted, the kids I love working with most in my day job are the kids that every other staff member at the school is tired of dealing with, but even so. Lovable-but-jaded-and-borderline-sociopathic contract killers, people. Not an easy feat. Suspended disbelief. I has it.

Completely appropriate use of narrative sarcasm. If I wasn't terrified she might kill me in my sleep I would want Francesca to be my bestie. Vescio has a way of using sarcasm and pop culture reference in her narrative voice that is just so fluid and natural. It's a testament to how well she knows her main character, because authenticity is everywhere you look. There are MANY laugh-aloud moments. Usually had at three in the morning while reading in the dark, much to my husband's dismay.

The overall pace and flow of the plot. The structure is so sound in this book. Beyond conceptualizing a unique story, Vescio is a good writer. I'm not sure if she's a plotter or a pantser, but either way she works it out really, really well.

How much fun this is to read. I said this with book one and I'll say it again. I love how out-of-the "traditional" NA box this series is. Yes there are sexytimes. But there's so much more in terms of new adult themes--identity and self discovery, growing up, etc--that I love about New Adult as a category. This is not your sorority sister's New Adult Contemporary. In fact, I'm pretty sure Frankie killed your sorority sister off while you were reading.

The ending! And I'm going to work very hard not to spoil it for you, so let me just say this: I was really scared I was going to hate the ending. I was ready to be mad and ranty and kick my nonexistent Jimmy Choos in the dirt all Katharine Fairholm style because I thought I was gonna be disappointed. The ending is delicious and perfect. With just a hint of Dawson's Creek. It gave me ALL THE FEELS, people.

WHAT I WANTED MORE OF

I felt like there was a little too much backstory for a sequel. At times toward the top of the book, I felt the pace was slowed down by explaining things we already knew from book one. Or catching us up on what had happened since book one in block narrative form. I think, though, that I am a bit pickier than most readers where this issue is concerned. So I'm not sure this will be an issue for most readers.

Selfishness in the main character. I probably don't mean this in the way you think. What I mean is that, in general, I'm not a fan of this whole self-sacrifice/suicidality ya/NA trend. It REALLY bothered me and made me ranty in DEATHLY HALLOWS and again in INSURGENT. And a whole bunch of other YA and NA novels, too. I think it's a mistake psychologically speaking, to encourage martyrdom in this age group. So if I had to nitpick on one theme in UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED, that would be.

Seriously, that's all I can find to pick on. This book is so good, you guys.

Short story long, buy this book right now. No really. Right now. The links are below.

Fangirl Friday: An Interview with C. Elizabeth Vescio

Today I'm excited to welcome to the blog C. Elizabeth Vescio, whose New Adult Contemporary UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED released on October 1st. This book is so much fun and completely breaks the mold of what we think of as New Adult. I'm so stoked to pick her brain today, and I think you'll love her answers as much as I do! I've also included some absolutely stunning teaser graphics the author made to promote her new book. Enjoy and share!

About the Author:

Jack of all trades and stereotypical black sheep, Cara has been writing somewhat dark and morbid since that teen angst hit somewhere in the early 90's- probably because her dad was a mortician. After pursuing a degree in English, she changed gears to photography and design in 2006... although she kept penning stories for fun while reading the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde and Hemingway (whom she adores even though he was a huge douche canoe). In 2009, her life shifted considerably and she found herself writing Elegantly Wasted- helping her sort out a bunch of stupid feelings and other lame stuff.

She enjoys cynical debates, cupcakes, making her mother-in-law sew her aprons that she never wears, zombies, the Fifth Element and Tomb Raider. She gathers her life inspirations from Neil Gaiman, Julia Child and Paul Simon. When she isn't out photographing her next project, she's studying color, concept and design or writing stuff down in hopes it makes sense one day... or she's on Pinterest.

Cara lives in Las Vegas with her husband, John and their three genetically altered dogs all of which have personal vendettas for the guy who cleans the pool.

Tell us about your writer's journey so far:
I have been writing since grade school, but never had I thought about publishing my work. It was just my therapy. In the past few years, I've met some amazing people who have helped me be able to say I'm an author. It's been quite a ride. I sat down and wrote Elegantly Wasted in the fall of 2009 after a series of life-altering events. I wrote the whole idea down in a couple of weeks and a few years later it was the story it is now.

Okay! Let's hear that Twitter Pitch!
Apply for a job at Elegance, Inc. where the Fairholm cousins will teach you manners, etiquette and the art of murder-for-profit.

What inspired this book? How is it a story only you could tell?
My family is my inspiration. They are a bunch of characters and they all love and support my endeavors. I think this story is unique because I incorporate small things I've experienced in my life while adding a largely embellished backdrop. I'm sure I'm not the only one to do that- but I may be one of the few to throw the biggest jerk of an MC at you and you find yourself liking her... rooting for her and her crazy family.

What's your favorite thing about writing?
Writing instills a calm for me. I'm very cynical and writing it out helps me relieve the stresses of daily life. It's part escape and part meditation. I also don't mind the extra income.

What's your least favorite thing?
It takes away from my social life. I'm an extrointrovert... yeah I made that up. I like being social but I love being in my office writing. I need people around me. I love to talk and listen. I adore my friends. When I get into that mode of writing, I turn into a hermit and I feel guilty about telling them I can't hang out. I also feel guilty because my husband is a total extrovert and I have to tell him the same thing.

Now it's time to brag a little. What do you love most about your book?
I love the impact my characters have on people. I get the widest range of amazing comments. I'm big on characterization. I think like a screenwriter at times- if the characters are good, no one cares that your plot might be a little over-the-top.

What's surprised you most about publishing post-agent?
I don't have an agent! I'm Indie published and my publisher took me on after reading my work. I lucked out in that respect. I have an editor, a copy editor, a social media manager... but not an agent. I have had many discussions about getting one. I think the closest thing I have is my entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles... she works hard at the idea of making Wasted into a show... and let's face it, it should be. (I'm bias)

Okay, now a little about you. (And yes, I stole these questions from In the Actor's Studio with James Lipton.) What Is Your Favorite Word?
Superb

What's your least favorite word?
Vaginal

What turns you on?
Confidence

What turns you off?
Desperation

What sound or noise do you love?
pretty much any sound effect from Star Wars.

What sound or noise do you hate?
chewing food or gum with your mouth open... seriously- stop it.

What profession, other than your own, would you most like to attempt?
blood spatter analyst... I'm willing to bet that job is pretty boring.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear G-d say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
If heaven exists, I doubt I'm going there... but in that rare case heaven let's me in, I'd like for God to take one look at me, point and say "the library is that way and Hemingway has been waiting for you."

Finally, what's the one question you've always wanted to answer in an interview? (And of course, you have to answer it!)
I'm also a gamer- and that never transfers into interviews... so "What's gaming character would you like to be for a day?" Answer: Lara Croft. I have been a Tomb Raider fan since the 90s and Lara has come a long way. I can't say I was impressed with her origin story because for fifteen years I just ASSUMED she was born into the world with two USPs, a ton of ammo, drop kicking bad guys and bitch slapping tigers... but hey, I get it... I still love her and I would love to have an ounce of her badassery.

Cara's new book, UNCONTROLLABLY WASTED is full of badassery, people! One of my favorite reads of 2013! Buy links are below. And come back tomorrow for my review and more fangirling!

Elegantly Wasted (New Adult): A Review and Teaser

Book Name: Elegantly Wasted
Book Genre: NA
Book release date: August 1, 2012 by Luna Station Press
Second print coming soon

On the eve of her high school graduation, proper socialite Francesca “Frankie” Fairholm rebelled against her elitist and controlling family to pursue the dark lifestyle of a contract killer for the enigmatic Osiris Corporation. Years later, with her training complete, she believes she's doomed to the life of a sociopathic lone gun until a botched hit brings two unlikely allies, her cousins Addison and Katharine.

Using Katharine’s etiquette school, Elegance, Inc., as a front, the trio weave through Frankie’s dark underworld, carrying out contracts, drinking too much wine, and trying not to get each other killed.

Trouble follows the team home when the death of the cruel Fairholm matriarch reveals more than they ever wanted to know about their family. As the funeral preparations play out, the trio begin to realize there is much more to their employer than meets the eye and their family connections run deeper than they ever imagined.

First and foremost, hurray for new adult contemporary that isn't formulaic as hell!! I love that Frankie doesn't go to college, get piss drunk in an effort to get over her tragically frat-ified high school virginity thief, fall in love with some dark, mysterious, brooding hunk, and get engaged before she earns her MRS degree. I think those are fun reads, don't get me wrong, but when I found out what New Adult "meant," I imagined something beyond American Pie Presents: Beta House. Vescio blows that out of the water--both literally and figuratively.

She also accomplishes the not-so-easy task of making a female serial killer a heroine. And a likable one at that. Frankie is just authentic enough for me to suspend my disbelief that a sheltered chick right out of high school could be trained as a contract killer. She's flawed and tangible and funny as hell. And despite the fact that she spends the majority of the book doing VERY bad things, I found myself rooting for her.

I felt at times like the pace and structure could have been better executed, but I think that's because Vescio works very hard to avoid infodumping and backstory in a tale that needs a lot of background to be told well. She accomplished this through the use of a lot of flashbacks, which for me got a little confusing at first. This sequencing boggle cleared itself up well before the end, however, and once I got to the heart of the story I couldn't put it down.

The love story is definitely not the focus in Elegantly Wasted, though there are some romantical elements to girlie-sigh over. (Can contract killers girlie-sigh? Hmm...) I, personally, wanted more Spark, and from the teaser for Book 2 at the back, it looks like we'll be seeing more of him in the sequel coming this fall so yay!

The only other factor I struggled with was a feeling at times that I was drowning in pop culture references, though I suspect that's just as much me as it is the book. I haven't had cable since college (and we won't talk about how long ago that was now) and I'd never heard a Justin Bieber song until 2011 (I worked hard at that .) So I felt like I was on the outside of some inside jokes at times, but not too often.

Short story long, pick this one up. Here's a teaser to get you started. Frankie, our unlikely heroine, is about to finish her first series of training with her contract killer sensei, Judah. Her last task is no biggie: she's got to kill someone for the first time.

***

I swallowed hard and brushed my wet hair from my face.

Judah watched my every move as I reached down and freed the knife from my purse. With shaky hands I walked over to the unconscious man and knelt down close to him.

"Breathe," Judah reminded me. "Follow through."

One. Two. Three. I felt my arms rise as if I had no control over them. Time seemed to slow down, as did the falling rain. I could hear the sounds of a distant city, smell the wet cobblestone mixed with the street garbage that was discarded in the alley. I took a short breath.

I aimed for his heart.

You can buy Elegantly Wasted now on Amazon and Barnes and Noble and add it to your TBR list on Goodreads!
