Awesomesauce Authors: A Review and Interview with T.M. Franklin!

One of my favorite New Adult reads this year was MORE, the first book in this series. So I was totally stoked when I was contacted to participate in the tour for Book 2. I gobbled it up as soon as it came across my NetGalley approval list and was not at all bothered to go back and read it again for this tour. And I'm super excited to welcome T.M. Franklin to my blog. Her interview is also included in this post so stay tuned!

About THE GUARDIANS

Ava’s life is . . . complicated.

After all, it’s not every day a girl learns she’s not entirely human, or unlocks hidden powers strong enough to make even the First Race sit up and take notice. After surviving an attempted kidnapping and standing up to the Race’s Ruling Council, Ava Michaels returns to college and what she hopes is a normal life. But Ava quickly realizes that for her, normal may not even exist anymore.

In fact, the Council wants her under their control, and they’re not the only ones. The mysterious Rogues have a plan of their own, and it turns out Ava’s a big part of it, whether she wants to be or not.

On top of that, her new relationship is tested in ways she never expected. Her boyfriend, Caleb Foster, has disappeared—accused of betraying the Race—and Ava herself stands implicated in a crime she didn’t commit.

Clearing their names will mean uncovering a web of deceit and intrigue with Ava woven right in the center. To unravel the strands, she joins forces with some unlikely allies; a Protector who once haunted her nightmares, a young girl with secrets as unexpected as Ava’s, and a group of rebel Guardians who have their own fight against the Council.

Together they stand in a battle to find the truth, bring Caleb home, and secure Ava’s freedom—not to mention save her life.

Dannie says:

WHAT I LIKED
The plot and storyline. I expected a mid-series slump, but this book holds its own. Though there were times when I wanted the pace to move a little faster, that was me being impatient and empathizing with Ava more than it was a problem with the book--I cannot wait to read book 3!

The well-developed characters. There are no Mary Sues in this bunch. The characters are well-executed and multi-faceted.

WHAT I LOVED
Everything I loved in MORE still applies. This is just a fun, fun series to read. It's a little bit X-men (which just makes me love it more), a little bit TWILIGHT, but not really. It stands on its own. Some reviews for Book 1 make comparisons to Edward and Bella. Maybe, if Edward weren't a controlling jackass and Bella were interesting. These two are soooooo much more compelling and fun!

There are sexytimes teases from the start! I love the chemistry between the two main characters. Though perhaps there is not as much steaminess as a lot of NA readers may be expecting, but that makes it great for younger readers, too!

Love love love banter between Tiernan and Ava. A couple parts made me actually LOL. At three in the morning. I scared a dog. And my husband. These are just book bonuses as far as I'm concerned.

Love all the plot twists and turns. Even the ones my gut niggled at me to suspect surprised me.

WHAT I WANTED MORE OF
Would benefit from more distinctive narrative voices between POVs

Mid-book, when a lot of time is being spent traveling, it felt like we were spending a lot of time traveling. I wanted faster pace there, though admittedly part of that was me being impatient to find out what was going on.

Sort of but not really spoiler here: The detail about Ava's dad being ill sort of appears out of thin air. It felt inauthentic that during the discussions of Ava's family up until that point that Dad being ill didn't factor into Ava's decision-making (ie whether to visit for Spring Break.

More emotional consistency--Ava waffles about her feelings toward Emma in a way that feels inconsistent more than undecided. I wanted a little more from her internal monologue in that respect.

Short story long, I loved this book. I cannot wait to read Book 3. While I'm waiting, find out more about T.M. Franklin in the interview below. Then buy THE GUARDIANS and tell me what you think!

About T.M. Franklin

T.M. Franklin started out her career writing non-fiction in a television newsroom. Graduating with a B.A. in Communications specializing in broadcast journalism and production, she worked for nine years as a major market television news producer, and garnered two regional Emmy Awards, before she resigned to be a full-time mom and part-time freelance writer. After writing and unsuccessfully querying a novel that she now admits, “is not that great,” she decided to follow the advice of one of the agents who turned her down—write some more and get better at it. Her first published novel, MORE, was born during National Novel Writing month, a challenge to write a novel in thirty days.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Mike, is mom to two boys, Justin and Ryan, and has an enormous black dog named Rocky who’s always lying nearby while she’s writing. Whether he’s soothed by the clicking of the computer keys or just waiting for someone to rub his belly is up for debate.

In addition to MORE and The Guardians, Franklin penned the Amazon best-selling short story, Window, as well as another short story, A Piece of Cake, which appears in the Romantic Interludes anthology.

Tell us a little about your writer's journey so far:

It’s been a crazy, busy, wonderful experience so far. I've learned a lot and grown a lot. I’d say the most rewarding thing about it is to have someone say they've enjoyed something I've written. That they stayed up late to read it, or got lost in the story – that makes all the hard work worth it!

Okay, let's hear your Twitter Pitch! (140 characters or less.)

The Council’s after her. Rogues want her. Cops think she’s a killer. In MORE, Ava found power. Now, to survive, she turns to THE GUARDIANS.

What inspired you to write this book? How is it a book only you could write?

Like Ava, when I was a kid, I was convinced I could do cool, superhuman things – like move things with my mind or maybe fly – if I only tried hard enough, believed hard enough. In essence Ava is me – at least that aspect of her, so in that respect, it’s a book that only I could write.

Of course, I was never able to do those things, but I thought, what if someone could? What if somebody had hidden abilities, and that childhood belief was not imagination, but maybe instinct or intuition? Ava is that person, and that was one of the ideas that inspired the trilogy.

What's your favorite thing about writing?

Well, as I said, having someone read and enjoy the story is the best thing about being a writer. I mean, as much as we like to say we write for ourselves, we all want someone to read it, right? We write because we want to share a story or communicate an idea. So having someone get what you’re trying to say is amazing.

But as far as the actually writing process goes, I’d say my favorite thing is when the words just flow. Sometimes, you can just picture a scene in your head like a movie, and hear the dialogue, and the words just tumble out onto the keyboard. That is SO much fun!

What's your least favorite thing?

Negative reviews, of course. I think every author dreads those. But I think you have to learn to take the criticism and learn from it when you can. When you can’t, you just have to let it go and try and move forward.

Now it's time to brag a little--What do you love most about your book?

I think I love the idea that it could really happen. There could be a hidden Race of super humans on Earth, who for the most part stay out of sight. There could  be Half-Breeds living among us right now – maybe you’re one – maybe I am! J Maybe the Race is out there and is responsible for things like Stonehenge and the pyramids. Maybe they helped things along when we needed a cure for polio or small pox. That, I think, is what’s most fun about the MORE universe.

What has surprised you most about publishing post-agent (in other words, something unpublished writers may not know about how the process goes after you get an agent)?

Well, I don’t have an agent, but I’ve had LOADS of surprises when it comes to publishing. I think the biggest one is how much work is involved that actually has nothing to do with writing the book! Promoting your book and your brand takes up a lot of time, and there’s always more to do. It’s all a lot of fun, but if you’re not careful, you can spend all of your time promoting and selling. It’s important to strike a balance between marketing and actual writing.

Okay, now a little about you. (And yes, I stole these questions from In the Actor's Studio with James Lipton.)

What is your favorite word?

Vociferous

What is your least favorite word?

Moist

ME TOO! (Aaaand I believe that brings the anti-moist author count to four!)
What turns you on?

Being passionate about life.

What turns you off?

Negative, why-me attitudes.

What sound or noise do you love?

Baby laughter—or any laughter, really.

What sound or noise do you hate?

Fingernails on a chalkboard. Or whining.

What profession, other than your own, would you most like to attempt?

Millionaire Playboy J

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear G-d say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

“Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Finally, what's the one question you've always wanted to answer in an interview? (And of course, you have to answer it!)

What originally sparked your interest in stories like MORE?

I’ve always enjoyed reading books with a little bit of magic in them. I think the first book I remember reading in this genre was “What the Witch Left” by Ruth Chew. I read it when I was a little girl, and I absolutely LOVED it. It’s about a girl who finds some unusual items left behind by her aunt in a locked drawer – like a pair of gloves that enable her to play the piano and sew perfectly, a robe that makes her invisible, and rubber boots that let her travel seven leagues with every step. I read that book over and over. Maybe it was the fact that I was taking piano lessons (and hating them) at the time that added some extra appeal. I wanted those gloves!

Book Blitz: MORE by T.M. Franklin

When today's Book Blitz happened across my inbox, I knew right away I had to participate. This was one of the first New Adult books I picked up that was not a contemporary romance. I was skeptical because, well, I'm me, but also because I had my doubts at the time that new adult could do genre fic the way YA does and still maintain it's categorical identity. If you've read my review of MORE, you know this was one of the very few, infrequent times I've been wrong about anything in my entire life. I consumed book 1 and moved immediately on to requesting a galley of Book 2, THE GUARDIANS, which I'll be reviewing here in the next couple weeks. In the meantime, here's a little about MORE, and an excerpt that will leave you, well, wanting more. Oh come, on, work with me here, people.

EXCERPT

When closing time finally came around, Ava shivered as she walked out of the diner, huddling deeper into her wool coat and tugging her scarf up over her mouth. She hoisted her backpack higher onto her shoulder before setting off down the sidewalk, quickly covering the two blocks to campus and only looking over her shoulder nervously a handful of times.

Maybe a dozen.

Fifteen, tops.

She hurried down the walkway toward the dorms, the dim path lights flickering little circles of yellow on the frosted concrete. The moon glowed slightly behind the haze of wispy clouds, and a shout of laughter drew her attention to a couple coming toward her, arms entwined. They were dressed as Romeo and Juliet, their costumes partially hidden under thick coats and mittens. They kissed, breath clouding around them, and began to run, smiling at her as they went past.

She couldn’t help smiling back.

Their footsteps echoed away until once again, the only sounds interrupting Ava’s quiet breathing were the crunch of her own boots and the squeak of her backpack straps.

And . . .

Ava stiffened, the peculiar feeling sliding over her once again. She scanned the landscape around her, facing straight ahead but her eyes seeking, carefully combing the surrounding shadows.

Nothing.

Still, she couldn’t shake that creepy sensation that someone was watching her. She quickened her pace, slipping off her right glove and reaching into her coat pocket to grip her pepper spray tightly.

Was that . . . ?

Were those footsteps?

Ava’s heartbeat quickened, her palms growing moist even in the brisk cold. She flipped the safety off the pepper spray, her thumb poised over the button. As she neared the bridge marking the halfway point to her dorm, she glanced over her shoulder quickly. Seeing nothing, she hurried over the bridge, cursing the burned-out bulb that left it in darkness.

Suddenly, a stifling feeling overcame her—like a dark blanket had been thrown over her head to suffocate her—and she whirled around, her backpack clattering to the ground as she whipped the pepper spray out of her pocket and held it at arm’s length. Ava gulped for air, eyes frantically darting about, and the trembling hand holding the pepper spray flailing as wildly as her gaze. She was sure someone was there. She swore she could feel them. She stood frozen with fear, waiting . . . watching.

After a few long moments, she shook her head, glad nobody had witnessed her desperate panic. With a heavy sigh, she pocketed her pepper spray, embarrassed at her own ridiculousness. She had to stop this nonsense. She was driving herself crazy. It was just a dream making her jumpy, nothing else.

Just a crazy, scary dream.

Ava bent to pick up her backpack, sliding it onto her shoulder as she scanned the horizon one more time. With a self-deprecating chuckle, she turned around to continue home.

Only to stop short in terror.

A man—a huge man—stood before her, mouth twisted in rage. He towered over her, at least six and a half feet tall, his shoulders wide, and arms banded with muscle. Shaved close to his head, his dark hair shadowed his skull, and his intimidating appearance was only enhanced by the jagged scar running down the right side of his face, from forehead to chin. He didn’t wear a coat, only a tight, black shirt and fatigues, black boots on his feet, and a wide leather belt with a mean-looking gun holstered at his hip.

It couldn’t be. But it was.

It was him. The man from her nightmares.

Ava scrambled back, but he reached out in a flash, gripping her upper arms and lifting her up so her toes barely brushed the ground. One hand slid to her throat, and he held her easily, pulling her closer to his frightening face.

“Please,” she begged, the word catching as she fought to breathe.

The man’s glare tightened, and Ava stared in morbid fascination at his mismatched eyes—blue and green—odd and vividly terrifying. She struggled, reaching for her pepper spray, only to have it slip from her fingers as she kicked out at the man.

He responded by laughing humorlessly, flipping her around and banding one arm around her torso. His grip was like iron, and she could barely breathe.

“Please,” she said again, dizziness closing in. “I can’t,” she gasped.
A press of metal to her temple transformed her fearful trembles into horrified shudders. She had no doubt. She was going to die. Her eyelids fluttered shut in defeat as he cocked the gun, the loud click echoing off the trees.

Then, a flash of black, a gust of wind, and suddenly she could breathe again. The man’s grip loosened, but he didn’t release her.

“Damn you,” he growled. “Stay out of this!”

Ava pushed him, her efforts in vain, as he hitched her up in response, tucking her under his arm like a bag of groceries. She kicked her legs, flailing desperately as the man spun about, pointing his gun into the darkness.

“Show yourself, you coward!”

The same flash of black, another blast of wind, and Ava fell to the ground, her head cracking on the concrete. She curled onto her side, moaning, lifting a hand to the back of her head, and squinting in shock at the blood that came away, streaking across her trembling palm.

Low grunts and the crack of bone on flesh floated on the air toward her, muzzy with her disorientation. She tried to focus, but could only make out two dark figures exchanging blows. Ava tried to sit up, but collapsed back onto the icy ground, overcome by a shock of dizziness and nausea.

Suddenly, the two dark beings seemed to meld into one, and in the next moment, she felt herself floating. She blinked; a face took form above her briefly, the features cast in shadow.

“Do I . . . do I know you?” she mumbled, fighting for consciousness.

“I’ve got you,” a low voice replied, and Ava nodded as a cool palm stroked her forehead, and the darkness consumed her.

Genre: Classified on NetGalley as YA, but I'd say New Adult FANTASY!!!!!!

Pub Date: October 4, 2012

Dannie Says: The name speaks for itself. I cannot wait to dive into book 2!

Ava Michaels used to think she was special. As a child, she fantasized about having magical powers . . . making things happen. She felt different from others her age, and just knew she was meant for something important. But, like most kids, Ava grew up and eventually accepted the fact that her childish dreams were just that, and maybe a normal life wasn't so bad after all.

Now a young college student, Ava begins to wonder if there were more to her childhood fantasies than she thought. She’s haunted by terrifying nightmares of a frightening man chasing her, determined to catch her, to take her—a huge hulk of a man with one blue eye and one green. Even during daylight hours, there are moments her hair stands on end with an uneasy prickle of awareness . . . and she just can’t shake the feeling that she’s being watched.

Unable to decide if she’s imagining things or just plain crazy, Ava finds an unlikely ally in Caleb Foster, a brilliant and mysterious man who comes to her rescue as a Physics tutor, but in reality has another mission in mind. What he shows Ava challenges her view of the world, shaking it to its very core.

The thing is, Caleb’s not quite what he seems. In fact, he's not entirely human, and he's not the only one.

Together, the duo faces a threat from an ancient race bound to protect humans, but only after protecting their own secrets—secrets they fear Ava may expose. Now they’re after her, bent on her capture or maybe even her extinction.

Fighting to survive, Ava has to depend on Caleb to lead her through the strange new world opening up before her. A world of magic and mystery, where she learns she’s not
actually normal . . . she's not even just special.

She's a little bit more.

What I liked:

The pace. It was strong enough that I read without stopping, even though I had to get up with the wee one in the morning. I did, however, feel that there were some large blocks of uninterrupted narrative that could have been condensed. Which, for me, is why pace was a like rather than a love.

The MC: I liked Ava a lot, but I felt like I wanted to know her better prior to the midpoint. I wanted to know more about her wants and needs and how the story arc might help her fulfill them. I loved her role in the outcome!

The world-building. I wanted *more* but I loved what I got. I think it's a tricky thing to balance in a series, particularly when so much of it happens in "our" world. I suspect there's more to come in the sequel(s).

What I loved:

The opening hook. Though it breaks the "don't-start-your-book-with-a-dream" rule, I felt okay with the way that decision was handled. And after the first chapter, I didn't put it down until I finished reading, which for me says this book has a great hook.

The timing and reveals with regard to the characters. I think that's a tricky balance in a series, because you want to save some goodies for later on. But I felt Franklin did a great job of giving us enough to make us look forward to reading more and finding out more about the characters in the future installments. For me this was especially true with regard to some of the minor characters who I'm looking forward to hopefully leaning more about.

The emotional tension and character chemistry was spot on for me. I was totally sucked in and invested in Ava and Caleb's romance, which doesn't happen a lot for me recently after reading so much New Adult and YA romance.

The story structure was really well done. I felt like the timing of reveals was just right and I never wanted the story to hurry up and happen or slow down and simmer.

What I wanted more of:

Uh...the whole thing. For real. I am hella irritated I have seven books on my to-review list before I get to The Guardians. [/pouting]

But I still get to read it before you guys. ;P

***MINI-SORT-OF-BUT-NOT-QUITE-SPOILER IN NEXT PARAGRAPH***

I was disappointed that the reveal with the Jordans' happened as a 'Tell'. Particularly with two POV characters, I felt like there were a number of ways this could have been presented 'on-camera' that would have made more of an emotional impact on me as a reader. Also, the presentation of it as a tell was repeated enough that it lost its impact altogether by the end.

Beyond that, though, I was really expecting more coming-of-age themes. I think that's an essential element to both the YA and NA categories, and I felt like there could have been more of that woven throughout the book. I really did want more New Adult tropes, because I think we're finally at the place as an industry where New Adult *is* branching out into genres besides romance and i was hoping to see a fantasy author tackle that challenge here. (I've no doubt she would kill it!)

I think in deciding to call this YA, the author could have just as easily made Ava a high school student. But the nice thing about indie publishing is you can basically break whatever the heck rules you want and get away with it.

The romance! But that's just me and not an actual problem with the book. I read it expecting it to be classified as New Adult because it takes place in a college setting. Since the author classified it as Young Adult instead, the level of sexytimes is acceptable, I suppose. Harrumph.

But these are pretty nitpicky things. I read the entire thing from start to finish in under four hours despite having a full day motherhood looming in the morning, and that's really the best endorsement I can give. And while the paperback price point is a little steep, the eBook is worth every penny. You can pick it up online via the links below.

Next month I will post my review of THE GUARDIANS so subscribe and stay tuned!
